Lake Wylie

The Catawba Power Company created Lake Wylie in 1904 by impounding the Catawba River. This is the oldest reservoir on that river, and it originally was named Lake Catawba. When ownership was transferred to Duke Power in 1927, that power company renamed the lake to Lake Wylie. The lake contains 12,177 surface acres, and approximately 4,861 acres of that lake lies in Mecklenberg County, North Carolina. Duke Power maintains control over this lake today, in partnership with South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, York County, and Mecklenburg County.

Fishing

Duke Power stocks this lake with bluegill and white and striped bass. South Carolina holds two records for white perch from this lake, and both the 1986 and 2007 records were tied at one pound, 15.3 and 15.2 ounces respectively. Anglers are advised to obtain proper licenses, as no reciprocal agreements exist between North Carolina and South Carolina that honor the other state's fishing licenses on any boundary waters.
