Bay Springs Lake

Bay Springs Lake is the northernmost reservoir along the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway in Mississippi. The lake is surrounded by recreation areas, providing visitors with great scenery and camping. Located along the Natchez Trace Parkway, this lake also is close to Tishomingo State Park and just 43 miles from Tupelo. Bay Springs Lake also is the only deep-water lake on the waterway.

Fishing

Ronnie Boren caught a state record six-pound, four-ounce chain pickerel at Bay Springs Lake in 1986, and Scott Wood snagged a 4.66-pound saugeye here in 2000. Anglers also can enjoy fishing for largemouth and spotted bass and crappie. The lake sees many fishing tournaments during all but the winter months.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers manage the recreation areas around the lake, including six concrete boat ramps with paved parking. Three boat ramps are located on the lake's eastern shores, including Crows Neck, McDougal Branch, and Cotton Springs. Two ramps -- West Damsite and Piney Grove -- are located on the western shoreline. On ramp is on the north shore at Scruggs Bridge. The City of Burnsville also maintains a concrete ramp with gravel parking at the city park. Prentiss County also operates two concrete boat ramps with gravel parking on the western Bayberry and Gin Branch areas. One full-service marina with slips is located on the north side of the West Damsite Recreation Area.

Lodging

Although the Corps of Engineers maintain the recreation areas around the lake, they only manage one seasonal campground at Piney Grove on the western shores. This campground contains 139 sites with water and electricity. Tishomingo State Park, located along the Natchez Trace Parkway near the lake, is open all year and offers cabins, camping, a boat launch ramp. Canoe rentals are available if you want to explore Bear Creek Canyon by water rather than on a trail.

Other lodging is available, but limited, in the towns around the lake. A wider variety of accommodations are available near and in Tupelo.

Review the Lake Resource Guide for additional lodging.
