Vernon Lake

Vernon Lake, located in Vernon Parish, Louisiana, is a 4,200-acre reservoir that offers a wide variety of water recreation because of its varying depths. Recreational boaters can enjoy deep boat channels and open waters near the dam. Anglers can take shallow-draft boats into the upper end of this lake to fish for bass. Visitors have access to nearby Leesville and to a state park at Toledo Bend Lake. The park is less than 20 miles from Vernon Lake.

Fishing

If you want to fish a lake that doesn't see a lot of pressure, then don't go that extra twenty miles to fish Toledo Bend Lake. Instead, stop at Vernon Lake to enjoy both open waters near the dam and shallower areas with timber at the upper end of the lake. Because of that upper lake environment, Vernon Lake produces some quality bass fishing. Other good catches in this lake include catfish and bream, which are abundant during summer months.

Boating

Vernon Lake is one of the few lakes in Louisiana that can accommodate a wide range of boat craft. From canoes to powerboats, this lake's improved boat lanes and deep and open waters near the damsite offer wide stretches for water recreation. Powerboaters want to avoid the upper end of the lake, where water is shallower and tree stumps abound. That said, this lake sees depths up to 50 feet, and most channels run between 15-22 feet. Boaters can find boat launches at the spillway off Vernon Lake Road, and smaller launches on Hickory Ridge Road, Lakeview Landing, Vernon Park Road, and Bivens Landing.

Other accommodations, such as private campgrounds, fish camps, and short-term rentals also are located near this lake. Leesville is the parish seat, and that town has about five hotels.
