Harris Brake Lake

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission created Harris Brake Lake in 1955, and it is the third largest lake owned by this organization at 1,300 acres. As part of the Harris Brake Wildlife Management Area, the lake is adjacent to an 800-acre green tree reserve, which is a prime hunting resource for ducks. Located just one mile south of Perryville, this lake is situated in a peaceful area that entices boaters, anglers, canoeists, kayakers, bird watchers, and campers.

Fishing

Anglers know Harris Brake Lake for its largemouth and hybrid striped bass, bluegill, crappie, channel catfish, and redear sunfish. Bait shops around the lake offer easy access to supplies.

Lodging

Part of the reason for all the serenity surrounding Harris Brake Lake is its close access to the Ouachita National Forest. The South Fourche Campground is located on Scenic Byway 7 just 35 miles from the lake, and the Lake Sylvia Campground is located just 13 miles from the lake along AR Highway #10.

Although camping also is available around the lake, you might want to pick a space at Petit Jean State Park, which is Arkansas's first state park. Located just 24 miles north of Harris Brake Lake, this park offers a newly renovated lodge, 33 cabins (some 1930s CCC/Rustic style), and 125 camp sites, including 26 pull-through sites. All camp sites offer water and electric hookups, and 35 sites have 50-amp electric and sewer. If you don't have camping equipment, you can rent two Rent-A-Camps and two Rent-A-Yurts from the park during March through November. This park also is the state's only park that maintains an airport. Aviation fanatics can fly in and camp at one of the airport's five fly-in camp sites.

For those who want more modern accommodations, you can find a resort on the lake, and hotels and resort accommodations in Perryville. Since the lake is located just 35 miles from Little Rock, visitors also can find a wide variety of lodging options in that city.

Review the Lake Resource Guide for additional lodging.
