R. E. "Bob" Woodruff Lake

Officially, the Robert F. Henry Dam impounds the R. E. "Bob" Woodruff Lake on the Alabama River, but this body of water is commonly known as Jones Bluff or Woodruff Lake. In fact, locals just call it the Alabama River. This riverine reservoir stretches from Montgomery to Selma, and is the uppermost impoundment on the Alabama River. The other two downstream reservoirs include William Dannelly Lake and Claiborne Lake. The waters that feed into Jones Bluff come from the Walter F. Bouldin Dam on the Coosa River and the Tallapoosa River. Attendance figures at this lake number at two million per year.

Fishing

Anglers can find bass fishing success, especially largemouth bass, in the backwaters off the main river. Also available are hybrid striped bass and white bass, a variety of catfish species, and crappie.

Additionally, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers offer a wide variety of accommodations, including fully-loaded campgrounds and other primitive camp sites along all three Alabama River lakes. Woodruff Lake visitors can find access to swimming, hiking, fishing, and boating on this lake surrounded by beaches, picnic areas, and boat launch ramps.

Review the Lake Resource Guide for additional lodging.

Communities

The Alabama River forms a border between several counties. On the north side of this lake, you'll find a portion of Elmore County, then Autauga, and Dallas County (Selma). At the top again going along the south banks, you'll discover Montgomery and Lowndes Counties. Montgomery, which sits at the east end of this lake, provides accommodations, an airport, and easy access to I-65 and I-85.
